I’m not in an all male environment, but I get this way too — I talk to my husband about it and he also gets uncomfortable about it and seems troubled and annoyed and angry. It’s like they are good sympathetic allies in general (and in specific too) but it’s hard to change everything about how they are raised and the culture for the better.
Yeah, it’s incredibly ingrained. I think our conversation mirrored the first time I really had to confront white privilege. I thought, “But I’m not privileged! I grew up super poor! And I’m a woman!” I had to get taken out of my comfort zone to understand it.
